My desire for becoming a healthcare provider began as a little girl. At a young age, I carried a stethoscope around, patched my dolls with colorful Band-Aids and gave them their shots. I wanted to heal and care for them. As time went by, what seemed like a simple childhood aspiration, evolved into a need and a true desire to care for others. Despite some difficulties in my early college years, I still have the same passion to fulfill my dreams. As the daughter of Cuban immigrants, I know about honest hard work, determination and about second chances. It is for this reason that I am re-applying to the PA program. I am committed and I have what it takes to succeed in this career.
My desire to become a Physician Assistant began in 2006 while I worked as a Medical Assistant for Dr. Ana M. Lamas. Dr. Lamas is a highly accomplished Board Certified Allergist and Immunologist in Miami, Florida. My workdays in her office were rapidly filled with patients to check in, vital signs to record, phlebotomy procedures, allergy skin tests and pulmonary functions tests. She took the time to teach me how to take a good clinical history, perform a focused physical examination, the importance of good bedside manners and to treat all patients with compassion and respect. Her personal history of having a child with food anaphylaxis, taught me about the difficulties and obstacles of living with food allergies; but most importantly, about how to use your personal experiences to help and empower others.
