Why Become A Peer Counselor

Decent Essays
I want to become a College Peer Counselor because the idea of college for me sparks my mindset goal in life after high school and it motivates me to put effort in my academic performance. I love the idea of college and it’s importance because most institutions including Wilson want students to attend a postsecondary education or a community college to postsecondary education depending on the student’s situation or route. Being a Peer Counselor will be a wonderful opportunity to help other students who have the desire or determination to attend college so the students could have those resources and opportunities to get there during the college application process, financial aid and scholarships, exams that are part of admission requirements

Dear Carolyn Boles Scholarship Committee, I have had a great first semester in college full of learning and meeting new people. I studied extremely hard the entire semester and was determined to get the best grades possible. My favorite class was psychology and I received a very good grade in the class, so I was asked to become a mentor for the class next school year. I also decided to work toward receiving a minor in health psychology because I loved the class so much. In another one of my classes, we learned about different health field careers in order to decide if nursing was right for us since it is such a competitive major at IUPUI.…

There honestly isn’t any population of people that I’m not interested in working with, after taking different courses in my undergraduate program, I found myself interested in working with all populations of people. It has always been a desire of mine to help others in any way that I possibly could. A main reason that I loved helping others came from watching my mother help others as…

Terina White Website Critique The North Allegheny Intermediate High School counseling website is one of the most thorough counseling websites I have visited. It reads, “Simply become who you are”.…

“Counselling is critical,” Hrabowski emphasizes, advocating for programs to be funded to guide students to colleges fit for them. Although our problem is about colleges, we don’t want students to be confused on what to do in life after college. We would get freshmen and sophomores focused on careers so as juniors they can find a college to match their career. Students would use the information we give them to fill out a worksheet for both careers and colleges to save for later use. We recognized that some students may not be interested in doing this so we decided to schedule an assembly in February where current seniors and former alumni give their experiences, stories, and regrets while preparing and applying to college. We are hoping that this will encourage students to do the worksheets and dedicate more time to preparing for…

“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way” these are the words of Viktor Frankl that have fueled me within the last few years. After traumatically losing my leg in an accident I did not lose my positive attitude toward life or my desire to help others, I choose my own way to continue the path I was following before this tragedy struck. From the age of 18 as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) to age 25 working as a Mental Health Associate (MHA) at a hospital, I chose to lead a life of service. My drive to assist others as a CNA would be the catalyst for me discovering that I wanted to be a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor. It was through my work that I discovered the common ground of suffering, but also the resilience of the human spirit.…

Post-Secondary plan After high school, I intend to go to Cabrillo Community college. Once there, I intend to major in psychology to become a mental health counselor. I chose this because since I was a small child, I've always wanted to help people, but felt that taking a career in medicine was not something I was interested in. To do this, I will have to take several courses in general psychology, professional ethics, cognitive psychology, and counseling psychology. For each semester, I intend to take four classes, and two courses in the summertime.…

I found it insightful to discover that CTE counselors keep close relationships with local employers to better advise and inform students on how to approach work-school balance. The ethical implications of a counselor expressing their values to a client Young, Scott, Craig, and Cashwell (2016) explain that it is often difficult for a person to exist and work in a manner that is value-neutral. According to Young, Scott, Craig, and Cashwell, 2016, value-neutral is a term in psychotherapy used to explain the goal of not changing the value of a client to match that of a professional, by assuming that the values of the professional are preferable. Although counselors often have their set of values, just like other people have, it is important that they understand that the goal of counseling is to ensure that a client examines his/her value systems and beliefs and make decisions accordingly. According to ACA code of ethics (2014), Section A.4.b., explains that counselors should refrain from imposing their values, behaviors, and beliefs.…

In this regard, reducing the dropout rate is a priority. Counselors should perform the functions of developers learning students and agents (Noel & Levitz, 1984). As developers of students, counselors should communicate to students the importance of building skills and further academic necessities and help them to recognize the importance of their academic hard work. At the same time, as learning agent counselors must manage, assist and give confidence to students to construct a model of success. Crucial personality includes a well-built sense of professional rapport, mission and compassion since the community college counselors require to be thriving.…

A peer mentor is defined as a person who uses their resources to support, encourage and inform someone. Going into this semester, I was unaware that I would be mentoring another student and thus doubted my abilities. Although I was excited to become a mentor, I questioned whether I would truly be able to make a difference in someone’s life. The difference that I wanted to make could be as simple as helping someone ace a test, but the news of mentoring threw me off track. Nonetheless, I gathered myself and tried to maintain a positive attitude.…
