I have volunteered for the BPSOS health fair each October for the past three years. The BPSOS (Boat People SOS) is a nonprofit organization focused on helping refugees. This organization sponsors free health fairs held in Norcross, GA with many health services for anyone who stops by. The services include influenza vaccines, various types of screenings, and physical exams. I volunteered with doctors and nurse practitioners at the bone-density screening booth, where I helped with the screening of osteoporosis for the underserved population.…

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

I want to serve as a Peace Corps Volunteer because I want to spread my passion for learning and teaching English, and give people the gift of education in order to empower them and allow them to experience more avenues of life. As a long time English major, I have come to know that there is a great strength that comes with writing. I have seen fellow students move people with their words, and strongly communicate their ideas and having the ability to teach students these skills fills me with a profound joy. Volunteering at Veterans Affairs Medical Center was one of the greatest experience I've ever had. Sitting down with the elderly and getting to know them, I noticed if more teens could actually sit down and take the time to talk to an elderly person they could gain an opulent amount of knowledge. Sitting down and getting to talk an innumerable amount of veterans as I could, I was intrigued by how each person had a story of their own going through WWII. Voluntarily, I was able to contribute to the organization by having open conversations with the veterans, providing beverages, and having a great time. It wasn't till the end of the program when my perception began to change about the organization I volunteered for, it's more than just about kids…

Growing up, I have always wanted to dedicate myself to doing something special in life. I was born in a village in Mexico where public health and education were very limited. I recall, one day, accompanying my mother to a ladies house where there was a sick child. My mother was one of the women in the village who would take care of the sick; she learned everything she knew from my grandmother. When we got there, I saw my mother prepare some medicine and giving it to the ill child.…

Joining the Peace Corps is something that I have contemplated on doing since my freshmen of Year College. As a child growing up in a developing country Cameroon, I have experience to some degree what it means to be unnoticed and uncared for. so when came to the united states in 2004 with my siblings, one of my high school teachers asked the class to write on a piece of paper what each of us would like to be when we grow up. As I remember vividly, I wrote “I want to become a political diplomat or a lawyer.” The reasons I choose these career paths were unknown to me at the time.…

As an only child growing up in a middle class family, I learned the value of helping others through my parents. My hard working parents were brought up in Bangladesh, a third-world country in South Asia with devastating poverty.
