Why Basketball Is Important To Me

Improved Essays
I’ve played basketball for at least 10 years and it’s sculpted the person I am today. I’ve put in countless amount of dedication and effort needed to pursue this sport. To dedicate 10 years to something before knowing where it might take you is a life gamble , and I was willing to take the risk. Unfortunately my time as an athlete has come to a pause. It’s the biggest change my life has ever sent my way.
Every athlete looks forward to their senior year, and look forward to playing on varsity. My body naturally trembles when I say this, but I am not able to play this year. I didn’t fit the criteria for the team. At first this was frightening. Basketball has consumed majority of my time and majority of my friends are on the basketball team.

There have been many elements that I have learned through the Harlingen High School basketball program, which may be transferred to any situation in life, as the basketball program has allowed me to determine the type of person I am. This was due to the fact that I was placed in many challenging situations, which fatigued me both mentally and physically, to a point which I chose how willing I was to overcome those obstacles. Organized basketball has been a part of my life beginning at age six, and has not left my side since. I have loved the game itself, and the actual competitiveness that is apart of it. Competitiveness is the overall intention for the game of basketball and would not and could not be enjoyed without such an element as it.…

The sport interested me, so I decided to give it a shot. I worked extremely hard to make the JV team, and was ecstatic about that. Even though I had accomplished my goal of making the team, my self-motivation caused me to continue to work at home, on my own, to further improve my skills. Two weeks into practicing with the JV team, the Varsity Coach noticed my tremendous…

Starting off I didn’t take the sport seriously; I always played it as a hobby and cared less about its rules. Practicing summer after summer I realized there is more to the game than just throwing the ball into the hoop. I then discovered books and online tutorial videos to help increase my intellect and skill of the game. In my sophomore year, I tried out for the first basketball team of my basketball career and unfortunately I was cut from the team on the last day of tryouts.
