Lying affects everyone and society has made it okay. For example, the TV show “Catfish” is just a lot of people lying to each other, because they are so scared that they will not be liked for the who they really are or are hiding something that they don 't want people to truly know about them. It has become so popular and normal to society to lie about themselves that we almost don 't know what is the truth anymore. In the essay, “The Ways We Lie”, Ericsson breaks down all the different types of lying such as, the little “White Lie” and how there are so many different lies that affect us. In the beginning of Ericsson’s essay, she states, “We lie. We all do. We exaggerate, we minimize, we avoid confrontation, we spare people’s feelings, we conveniently forget, we keep secrets, we justify lying to the big guy institutions”(Ericsson 419). Lying is so much easier than facing the truth and there is a very thin line of lying. For instance, no one can ever say that they have never lied before, it is impossible for anyone not to. Even if the lie is very small like saying you don 't feel well and canceling the plans you had with someone because you truly did not want to go out of the house. Although it might not be hurting anyone it is still a lie that most everyone does on a daily basis. Lies can be big and hurtful for example, cheating on someone. Instead of telling your partner that you don’t want to be with them anymore or are not happy with the relationship, they find someone else to fill those wants and needs. He states how there is more than one victim to a lie, that the victim is actually the lair because not only are they hurting the other person they are hurting themselves. Ericsson also believes that the liar is also hurting themselves, just like an alcoholic would. “We don’t want to incorporate that much reality into our lives because to do so would be paralyzing” (Ericsson 415). She is addressing how much it would hurt a liar to tell the truth, basically causing them to be their own demise. It all comes full circle to everyone
