“As a tale openly preoccupied with questions of authorship, interpretation, and textuality, 'The Yellow Wallpaper" quickly assumed a place of privilege among rediscovered feminist works, raising basic questions about writing and reading as gendered practices”(Shumaker 589-590). During this time, Gilman was struggling with this idea of feminism and what exactly it meant to be a female in the 1890’s which are still extremely true today. This can be seen through out this story in many ways, some of which include when the narrator does not understand why she is not allowed to leave.
