Why Are We Here?
The overarching theme of the last five weeks is, simply put, the pursuit of business as a vocation is in no way essentially separate from or in conflict with living a Christ centered life. If we are clear and strong in our Christian faith, if our faith sincerely informs our behavior in all aspects of our life- then we can, and it is argued, should take stewardship of His people and His gifts in the business community in order to further His mission in the world. This is the very reason I came to Cornerstone and is what sets it apart from all the other options. The aim of this course and this program is to offer practical instruction on fully living our faith.

We are held responsible for how we care for our co workers, clients and communities. We are held responsible for how we use profits to grow and sustain an enterprise that allows us to serve Him. We are held responsible for how we behave in the face of the aspects of business we cannot control, and for taking the initiative to change the things we can. We are held responsible for maintaining our integrity in all facets of business dealings and communications- to be clearly and openly communicating and consciously seeking the best for His purposes and His people. There are a few examples nationally and locally of successful businessmen and women who have blazed a trail- but the path is still rocky and littered with obstacles.

In this course we were introduced Stephen Covey’s ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People’ as one guidebook to help us navigate that path. The principles may be used for life in general - they are not limited to one’s work life- but are to be used to grow, change and be more effective stewards of our time, treasure and talents in every aspect of life. The 7 Habits is not strictly speaking a faith based book- but the habits are all built on the foundation of well defined personal value system based on unchanging principles and as such dovetail nicely into the Christian

While working at The Scholarship Foundation of St. Louis I wanted to do more within the organization. However, leadership roles require higher education, so I decided to go back to school to pursue my Master’s degree focusing on Nonprofit Leadership Management. I was first introduced to Orvin Kimbrough while working at The Scholarship Foundation. Orvin was a former recipient of the Foundation’s Interest-free Loan Program. When I worked at the Foundation, Orvin was a successful recipient, working as the Vice President of Major Gifts and Planned Giving at United Way.…

No doubt, this may seem odd, but when the words leadership and female were typed into the search section of the library database there was a phrase that was repeated in several articles that stuck in my head. Therefore, of course, this meant my curiosity had to be appeased, but how to tie it into this discussion on leadership is what my question became? First of all, the phrase is partially mentioned as the “glass ceiling” in many articles, which was coined during the 1980’s as the invisible barrier that is gender or minority related (Wikipedia, 2017). Secondly, women as leaders have fought through this barrier of invisible glass in countless cases if there is not a mentor to pave the way for them to advance (Anderson & Buzzanell, 2007).…

I believe and feel that through practicing OFNR, many relationships and friendships will be salvaged and/or created. In this practice, leadership causes those in disagreement to vocally and fully produce ones observation, feeling, needs and a reachable request that will effective resolve or began to facilitate some sort of resolution to a heated discussion. Thus far in this semester, “foundations in pastoral care” has deeply challenged and transformed how I view pastoral care. With supplying tools such as active listening, purposeful leading, and non-violent communication, I am highly more prepared for pastoral ministry then I ever would be. It is scary to see how much information that many in the African American context is missing out on by opting out of coming to obtain a seminary education.…

Discovering the sacramental life is the central focus of the incarnational tradition. “The Incarnational Stream of Christian life and faith focuses upon making present and visible the realm of the invisible spirit. This sacramental way of living addresses the crying need to experience God as truly manifest and notoriously active in daily life” (Foster 238). Living according to the principles outlined in the incarnational tradition challenges us to recognize God’s sovereignty in all situations. It promotes total dependence upon God and blurs the line separating earthly and divine.…

Marketplace leaders can maintain cultural relevance without abandoning biblical values by learning to incorporate these values into their leadership efforts. Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy used his smartphone as an example of one of today’s technology tools that can be used to help us be more effective in everyday tasks. Mr. Cathy addressed the importance of staying informed and in touch with technological changes and making the most of what they offer, he even asks himself, “Am I changing as fast as this technology is changing?” (Cathy, 2013) As a leader we have to embrace technological changes, but we should also embrace the things in our life that never will change, like the teachings of Christ (Cathy, 2013). Mr. Cathy also stated the importance of using his pocket Bible as a tool to remain in touch with God’s word.…

Timothy Witmer (2010)—author of The Shepherd Leader: Achieving Effective Shepherding in Your Church—says that servant leaders who act as shepherd leaders carry out multiple responsibilities. This study proposes the following responsibilities of K.E.E.P., which includes knowing, empowering, equipping, and protecting (Witmer 2010). Essentially, these four roles are a combination of servant leadership and agape love working together. However, Frederick Taylor (1915, 9)—author of The Principles of Scientific Management—argues that leaders do not need to take on multiple roles to develop employees (or teams for that matter) to their fullest potential, rather leaders should have each employee take on a specific role within the company and then work at learning that role to their fullest potential, in order to develop the utmost profit for both the company (i.e., Increased cash flow and business development) and the employee (i.e., Higher pay and increased effectiveness at assigned role/job). In contrast, Peter Drucker (2011, 18)—author of…
