We see many people who like to step out and try new fashions that are out of the norm but usually people tend to stick to the fashion that is recognized by their specific community. This week I will discuss the relationship between community and fashion. I will describe my observation of a specific community and their fashion norms.…

Why is the market targeting the young girls to dress as young adults? And how are these pieces of clothing expressing how the young girl defines their identity? Identity is a set of characteristics that somebody recognizes as belonging uniquely to himself or herself and constituting his or her individual personality for life. As the young girls are trying pursue and proclaim their own identities, they are inclined to look up to young adults they admire in order to search for an identity they want to claim as their own through imitation, as they feel a bit insecure with who they are. As the young girls are trying to fit in today’s society they are being consumed through what they see and known as fashion in order to be identified in a subgroup…
These younger generations of girls/ladies have learned that not only can they be a princess and look beautiful both inside and out, but they are strong young ladies that have the world at their finger tip. This generation can become whatever their hearts desire as they increase their learning and social involvement. Parents should take it upon themselves to discuss with their children the visual display that is exposed by media such as Disney’s Princesses and today's modern idols; because their child might be going through the discovering phase or like Orenstein's daughter understands that, being a princess is a phase, but being a fireman is for…
A study of sexualisation can be accessed through consumerism, marketing certain products towards young girls. For example Brat dolls dressed in sexualised adult like clothing, miniskirts, fishnets tights, high heels with a generous amount of makeup, including long hair. The sexualisation of girls through the media is designed to portray hegemonic ideal images of beauty at a young age, showing girls dolls dressed in adult like manner may alter their mind to grow up faster and apply such standards to themselves. Constant advertising of “pretty” dolls may trigger girls to believe that prettiness equates to happiness, so they will now try to imitate the dress style, body weight, hair extension and makeup to fulfil their happiness. In this case…
The Great Depression of 1929-1939 might not be anyone’s favorite time period, but there were many aspects from which today’s American youth could learn. This time period caused heartache for many Americans, but today people have forgotten what it is like to live without certain supplies. Some Americans might not have ever even known what it is like to improvise with what they had while the people who endured the depression learned to appreciate and be thankful for the bare necessities. During the Great Depression, many families did not know if they would be able to eat from day to day. If they did get an entire meal, absolutely nothing would be wasted.…
When I was a teenager there was no booty shorts or teenage lingerie or a make-up line for girls and teens. Now stores are targeting all of theses things for younger girls making them grow up so fast or look like they are grown. I remember having my eight-year-old niece over and when she arrived to my house her face was full of makeup and she was wearing a bra under her little tank top and her booty shorts. I wiped her face off with a wet towel and told her she was to young to wear makeup and that she should be a little girl and enjoy it.…
This also shows that the way the teens would style themselves, would be a reflection on the latest trends. Fashion is timeless and therefore will never be overpowered by something else, it reflects on who you are, a quote that demonstrates this is “Fashion rests on a violent sensation of time”. This shows that fashion is a never ending thing. This also shows that fashion is always going to be around and no one can change that. In conclusion, fashion reflects the type of person others…
Kids are putting their looks above far more important things. A poll of 3,000 teenage girls done in 2009 showed that more than a quarter would spend their money on looks rather than education. One in five had considered plastic surgery. An Ofsted study of 150,000 children from ages 10-15 says that 32% of the kids worried about their bodies. Another survey, from BBC, showed that “half the girls of ages 8-12 want to look like women they see in the media.…
Fashion has always been an influential and evolving part of women’s lives throughout history. However, it did not start to become a psychical and psychological health problem in America until the 1920s. Though the iconic “flapper” era brought about edgy clothes that led to a beneficial feminist movement, it also fostered the detrimental idea that women’s appearances must be perfect at all times. Thus, these unattainable standards led to the feeling of inadequacy that is still prominent in society today.…

Analysis of “Barbie Doll” by Marge Piercy Barbie has been an important part of the toy fashion doll market for fifty years. Mattel received many criticisms about Barbie and the impact she has on young girls. In the poem “Barbie Doll” by Marge Piercy the title perfectly introduces the message of the poem. The Barbie doll is known to be the “idol” figure that all girls want to be. The toy symbolizes the need to have physical qualities that fit in, just as the poem implies.…
Catalogs towards the beginning of the 1950s were geared towards older women, but the end of the decade greets the teenage scene as illustrated in these catalogs. Furthermore, the woman’s closet must be extensive as to showcase her husband’s success. Since women were pushed back into the homes as mothers, they had to focus their time on their appearance. There was casual clothing that existed for women, but this clothing was not to be worn in public or around the husband. This stigma around having a “perfect appearance” eventually turned out to be devastating, as many youth began to wear more revealing clothing towards the end of the…
Andy started to dress fashionably as her attitude to fashion became stronger as her colleagues began to accept her and encourage her which increased her self-esteem. Due to Andy initially demonstrating an ambivalent attitude towards fashion it was easy to change her attitude as she had neither a negative or positive attitude towards fashion. She had an ambivalent attitude towards fashion because she had little knowledge on fashion and how to dress. Andy’s attitude was also affected by her situation as she began a new job at Runway where everyone was dressed differently to her. Andy decided that she is no longer going to present an ambivalent attitude towards fashion because she wanted to fit the new social situation she was in and it the social norms that were evident in her workplace.…
Our appearance is important. It can give us confidence or it can make us feel weird. Take care of your appearance, dressing smart for the right occasion gives us self-confidence. At the same time, we don’t want to be a slave of fashion trends. Dress for yourself don’t dress to please others and to receive complements.…
