Why Are Warning Labels Necessary

Warning Labels: Humorous, but Necessary Have you ever purchased a new product that had a warning label on it that made you laugh and wonder, how many people did this before the manufacturer had to put a warning label on it? Well, I have. I own several hair appliances. Each of them having their own warning label on them. I’m sure everyone has seen the one that is on every hairdryer telling them not to use it in the shower or the bathtub. It is sad to think how many people were electrocuted before someone said, “Hmmm, I guess we should warn people they need to get out of the shower or bathtub before they try to dry their hair”. My daughters hairdryer has a warning label that reads: “Do not use while sleeping”. I kid you not, it actually says that. How about a straightening iron? Have you seen the warning label they now have on them? I recently purchased a new one, and the warning label on it reads: “Warning, this product can burn eyes”. It has a picture of the straightening iron and an eye with long eyelashes with an X across them. Seriously? Come on, did someone actually try to straighten their eyelashes? These are two products that I already knew had ridiculous warning labels on them. I decided to look around my house for others.

Coffee cups that have a warning, “Caution: Contents may be hot”. We have all heard about the case in 1992 of the lady who spilled her coffee on her lap and then sued McDonalds for millions and won. My sister was employed with McDonalds when this happened. Something that many are not aware of, is the individual who was burned was a seventy-nine-year-old woman who suffered third-degree burns because the coffee was too hot. Now, McDonalds has warning labels on all of their coffee cups warning people that contents may be hot. Employees had to give this warning to customers when they served them coffee after this

During all of the time before the coffee incident McDonalds were aware of the dangerous conditions of the coffee inherent in serving to its customers. During the litigation it was also determined that they knew of the likely consequences of such acts, the risks involved and acted with a conscious disregard for the safety of their customers. Once an implied warranty of fitness has been created and is violated then it is a violation of Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) § 2-315.…

In Morgan Spurlock’s article, “Do You Want Lies with That?” he writes extensively about the warning label. The reader may be prone to ask, why did someone think that it would be a clever idea to eat the silicon packets found in products? Or what about the first person to think it was a clever idea to operate a hair dryer while in a bathtub? People should be able to use their common sense; a few hundred years ago, humans were responsible for their own survival, and they needed to use logic, so they used it.…

Most other forms of food poisoning seldom do lasting harm to a healthy person” (Eighner #). Throughout his essay, this stereotype seems to bother Eighner the most. When sharing a package of crackers with his acquaintance, Eighner becomes offended when his friend asks if they’re safe to eat, “This question always makes me angry. But this case was very clearly an ethical issue that needed to be addressed which is why I believe Mrs. Liebeck won her case. Even though there are no laws about brewing your coffee extremely hot there is when that coffee could hurt someone like it did in Mrs. Liebeck's and 700 other peoples case. It is illegal for companies to be negligent and omit warning labels from potentially dangerous products, even something as simple as a cup of coffee. Even though the punitive damages that are intended to deter companies from committing torturous acts were reduced I still believe they did their job because now every cup of McDonald’s coffee comes with a warning label reading “caution contents VERY hot” and the reminder of Stella…

However, safety regulations often extend beyond just a company’s interactions with its workers. Safety often regulates the interaction between the company and its value chain as well as with consumers. As such, Gril-Kleen must be considered food safe, heat safe, and skin safe (Hisrich, et al., 2013). Further, many labeling and warning requirements have been mandated for every step of the process from production to use (United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, n.d.). In addition to existing regulation, companies should try to predict areas that may become regulated regarding their products.…
