In the movie, “Dangerous Minds,” Miss Johnson is given the opportunity to teach a class full of students who have had a reputation of driving their teachers insane. The reason why the position is open is because most teachers get fed up with the students in the class and they decide to leave. On one day Miss Johnson comes across a dilemma that the previous teachers had come across with. There were three students that were part of a fight at the school. Two of which were her students that were named Emilio and Raul. After this fight, Miss Johnson soon finds out that Raul was actually defending himself rather than bullying or starting the fight. She takes this to account when she decides to speak to Raul’s parents. Raul’s parents are disappointed at first since their son is going to get suspended. Then Miss Johnson mentions that he was merely defending himself and that they should be proud of Raul. She mentions that he has a lot of potential and that she really enjoys having him as a student in her class. Raul is actually one of her favorite students. This surprises the parents because they have almost never come across good news from one of Raul’s teachers before. This is what Hall says, “Positive reinforcement can be a powerful classroom management tool” (p. 359). This has a positive effect on Raul. She notices when is in her classroom that her students are from a lower class. They have had a tough life and that they are really stubborn. One student in specific is the student that has a major effect on the rest of the classmates. That student’s name is Emilio. Emilio does not like Miss Johnson at all in the beginning of the movie. He feels that she is an outsider and while not have any sort of significant change to anyone else’s life. So, he goes against anything that she believes in. She sees this after she is finally getting somewhere with her class in her lessons and Emilio decides to throw all that way and convince his classmates again that what she is doing is pointless. These actions influence everyone else to not want to listen to Miss Johnson. Miss Johnson realizes that if she is able to convince Emilio that her intentions are good and she just wants them to have a successful future. This perspective hits Emilio once he sees that Miss Johnson went out of her way to speak to Raul’s parents and help the situation after he got into that fight with that other student. Emilio is ultimately the key to connection the Miss Johnson to her students. This gives the classroom more stability.
