Why are stories important? For thousands of years, stories have had the ability to evoke certain emotions, entertain audiences, inspire, inform, and create positive change. They have been passed down through storytelling in various forms for generations, helping us preserve our unique histories and cultures, while reinforcing societal norms. They help us escape the crazy world we live in through fantasy and folklore, while at the same time helping us to better relate to others and make a better understanding of the world we live in today; they bring order and meaning to the chaos we call life. More importantly, stories are able to connect people from various backgrounds. Through stories we are able to empathize and relate with one another,

Although this story was short in length, it did not lack material or value. It discusses how Gweneviere’s health rapidly declined after having a medical procedure to remove a large tumor from behind her left eye that was resting on her optic nerve, causing her to go blind. After having surgery and suffering a stroke due to the strenuous removal of the tumor, she was permanently diagnosed with short-term memory loss that frightens her every day. As stated in the text, Gweneviere said, “And the thing that scares me the most, is the thought that I will wake up one day and I’ll be eighty years old and I won’t remember the last forty years of my life,” showing her concern and fear over her current state of health (Isay, Jacobs, StoryCorps 114). The story also goes on to talk about her other concerns in regards to her family, friends, and forgetfulness of what she has eaten throughout the day, as well as, her own techniques on how to remember things, such as, the date in which she keeps a notecard in her pocket. However, although her circumstances are not the best, Yasir and her tend to make light out of every situation by discussing all of the funnier times that came as a result of her incident, leaving the narrative on a light hearted and positive
