Ever After, a movie that is based on the 16th century, does it really connect to the Renaissance? This movie is not a reliable source to use if you are looking to learn about the Renaissance; because this movie takes place in France, Leonardo da Vinci’s timing in the movie was off, and the time frames of the movie were incorrect. In this movie the characters spoke in an English accent, not a French accent that just goes to show that the writers of this screenplay did not pay a lot of attention to the way their actors spoke. The Renaissance was the time of social status, so that means that once you have your place on the triangle of social strata, you do not get a new one. The monarchy, like Prince Henry, would have very little communication with the lower class of status, unless they had their own serf. The Game rock, paper, scissors was played in the motion picture multiple times. The games origin is 17th century Renaissance, which is about 100 years after the Renaissance. If somehow the game made its way to the Renaissance before the 17th century, it would have traveled along the Silk Road. The Silk Road was the primary route of exchange and trade through most countries. In the screen play, it is mentioned that there is solid chocolate from Spain. It would only make sense if the chocolate was not solid. Because in the Renaissance their chocolate was not solidified it was mainly just in the form of the cocoa bean. Another item that would have been traded on the Silk Road that was mentioned in this film would be weapons and swords. The weapons in this movie were way too sophisticated and detailed for those times. This just proves that the creators of Ever After were very un-educated on the Renaissance.
If you are looking to learn about the Renaissance you probably do not want to use this movie as your resource. This movie shows no example of all of the gore and death of the Renaissance. The Renaissance was a very hard time for very many people, and this film gave no examples of those times.
