The Importance Of Nonverbal Communication And Intercultural Communication

Dale Carnegie states, “There are four ways, and only four ways, in which we have contact with the world. We are evaluated and classified by these four contacts: what we do, how we look, what we say, and how we say it” (Cole, 2002, p.72). When people communicate only about 7% of the conversation is actual words and 80% of the way people communicate is through body language, tone, symbols, and volume (Cole, 2002). Nonverbal communication is extremely important when people communicate and communication styles differ from culture to culture making traveling around somewhat challenging. In any situation, being aware nonverbal communication is essential when traveling between cultures, or even from city to city, so people are not affected in negative ways. This paper will first develop an understanding on what exactly nonverbal communication and intercultural communication is, then how not being aware of nonverbal communication can cause problems when traveling through different cultures around the world and in the everyday life. There is a problem but it is not a world ending issue. People are human and make mistakes so if there is a problem then the person has a chance to fix them. This problem is prevalent because it is more of a helpful tip for travelers around the world. The harms with the problem are not worse than expected. After the research there were not any huge factors involved that would make the problem a bigger issue. Nonverbal communication is very subtle to begin with and having people become more aware of their bodies would make step towards fixing the problem. People can learn about who they interact with and where they come from so they can be conscious of traditions and cultures they are surrounded by.
