Carolyn Gregoire states in the article “Why are millions of people spending so much time watching others play video games?” that people cannot experience 100% of social activities in real life through internet media. Online media also decrease people’s social ability in real life. In the news, Gregoire shows that most American adult spend almost a half day to watch other players play video games on Twitch.tv. Those audience and players have their own community in Twitch.tv where they can chat with each others and exchange experiences. Author believes that audience for Twitch.tv are engaged by its social network. We do not expect people to learn any social skills through this “far away” communication because been able to see each other is already a pleasure things to do.
Another reason point to unequal social process is that community online is lack of reality. Many young people put too much effort on social media like Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat. Peggy Orenstein says in her article “I tweet, therefore I am” that people post photos online to show others who they are or who they want to be in imagination. We cannot ignore the good impact of social media to people who are far away from their home. People like international students use online media as the best way to connect with their families and friends. For example, I am an international student at UC Davis and far away from my home, China. When I heavily miss my family and my friends in China, I cannot reach them immediately face to face only until summer due to long distance. Therefore, the best way to decrease my frustrated feeling is to see their faces through Facetime or chat online. I will facetime with my family every week and update photos on WeChat, a social media like Facebook, continually. Facetime with my family is the most precious time every week for me. Instead of decrease the intimacy among people states by Gregoire in the news, I feel much closer with my family during Facetime. Furthermore, engage in a social media is a way to consisting connect with friends in China. Reply my Chinese friends’ comments makes me feel like they are still around me. Update photos and read comments beneath make my existence among my friends’ circles in China.
