Why Are Labels Bad

Once a person is labeled, it sticks with them their entire life. When I was in elementary I was known as one of the smart kids. Now I am one of the average kids in high school yet I am still considered one of the smart ones. I don't see this as a bad thing though considering some labels are not bad. I think a label sticks with a person for life because people will always remember the label you have been given, people may not be in your life during your time of change and will still consider you that label, and not all labels are bad and some people choose to keep those labels. Once you've been labeled, people will always remember that label. Even if they don't mention it, they have the memories. Some people may even mention it to other people, and everyone will know that label without you knowing. It is almost impossible to live a life without the people who knew you as a certain label. Friends, family, and acquaintances could tell others about your label and change there opinions, just as easily as you gained your label. Additionally, it is likely that a few people would still see those traits in you, despite you changing your behaviors. The label may not stick around, but the memories will always be there. …show more content…
For example, if you were a bad kid when you were in elementary school and your teacher only saw you during that time frame, when you go to see her again in high school her last memory of you will be you as a bad kid. This works the same way in many other scenarios. All it takes is someone not seeing you in your time of change, and they may never think you changed. These are the people who will talk about your past with your newer friends given the chance to. Regardless of whether they didn't know you changed, or they didn't notice, it is unlikely that they will ever

One example of credible research done to study the effects of labeling on one’s self-identity,…
