Initiatives and referendums essay Initiatives and referendums are an important part in our government. Having the choice to let us (the people) voices be heard gives a broad view of things that need to be changed whether it is a certain law that needs to be passed or denied we have the power to make an impact. When people have the opportunity to speak their mind specifically through election it will make them want to be more engaged and informed as to actually what changes need to be made and what laws need to be passed. Some people think that when election time rolls around their vote does not matter and they end up not even voting. This may alleviate some of the voter frustration and quite frankly get some more people involved. Also, if the government were to see that a subject was getting this type of publicity good or bad it could persuade them to listen to the public and base their final decisions off of their initiative. Keeping check of our government is important too, initiatives and referendums are a good way to do that. Our government cannot make any decisions without it going through us first. Anyone can file a petition for a proposition to be voted on, for example, someone could petition for transgender bathrooms to be taken away, if they get enough yes votes they can be taken away. Finally, candidates and get unlimited funds by wealthy people which can hold a tremendous influence on the ballot measures meaning when a candidate running and they have unlimited amounts of money they can spend on the campaign their word for better or for worse will get out in more ways as well as their views on what they are voting on, if a candidate explain a proposition a certain way that voter will be persuaded on whether they agree with that one person or not.
