Why Are Greasers Considered An Outsider

First, the Greasers were particularly shown as outsiders. They grow up on the wrong side of the tracks on the poor side of town. Even though the two main groups were the Greasers and Socs, the Socs were accepted in society. They were the upper class, the people with the most power. The Greasers on the other hand are the complete opposite. They were the lowest of the lower class, almost to the point of being homeless. Although all the Greasers had each other, but in society, they were the “Outsiders”. Most of the Greasers realized they had little or no chance of escaping their dead- end lives. They were the rich kids who had plenty of money and no boundaries set down by their parents. They also resorted to a life of crime and violence, mostly out of boredom, and few of them lived up to their societal expectations. Ponyboy was the outsider in this novel. Unlike the other Greasers, he didn't fight out of hatred, or pride, or for fun. He didn't believe in fighting unless it was self defense. Darry complains that he “doesn't use his head”, and didn't think of carrying a knife or other weapon around with him. Ponyboy watched the sunset. He read books and loved going to the movies by himself. The Greasers couldn't understand this. He was also very smart and kind. No Greasers were as dreamy, artistic or poetic as Ponyboy, and preferred to go wild, get drunk and get into fights instead. Ponyboy was still the outsiders at the end of the novel. He was still very kind and kept all of these things that he had. He never changed. The Greasers were still the outsiders because although they won the rumble between them and Socs, in society, they were still changed

LIFE IS ROUGH ALL OVER: In the novel, Ponyboy learns that life is rough all over. Ponyboy states, “Half of the hoods I know are pretty decent guys underneath all that grease, and from what I've heard, a lot of Socs are just cold-blooded mean --- but people usually go by looks,” this piece of evidence shows that Ponyboy thinks that Greasers are judged and thought of as hoods and delinquents merely by their looks. This proves that life for the Greasers is not fair. Life for the Socs is also not fair either, as Cherry says, “We have troubles you've never even heard of.…
