Why Are Fine Arts Programs Important To Students

In schools all over the US, there has been a hotly debated topic, whether or not fine arts programs should be are beneficial to students. Fine arts programs have been recorded in helping raise standardized tests scores, raise students self confidence, and helps children develop a better cultural awareness. Though some people say that funding these programs is a waste of money, there have been many studies done, showing the benefits of fine arts programs embedded in students education. These programs-including music, art, and drama-are vital in a student's education. One reason why fine arts programs are so important to children is how it benefits them academically. An article written by Grace Lynch [3] states, “ As we live in an increasingly diverse society, the images of different groups in the media may also present mixed messages….Teaching children to recognize the choices an artist or designer makes in portraying a subject helps kids understand the concept that what they see may be someone’s interpretation of reality.” This means that if every student participates in a fine arts program during some point in their life, the next generation will be able to think about the different aspects an artists or musicians puts into their piece of work.
In conclusion, music, art, and drama play a key role in a student’s education. Although many people doubt the benefits of fine arts programs, studies show that they help with raising tests scores throughout the country, students having higher self confidence, and it helps children develop a better awareness of the culture around
