“Rhetorical Reading Strategies and the Construction of Meaning” from Haas & Flowers wants us to understand the true meaning of reading and writing, how we need to see reading as a “constructive rather than a receptive process” (Haas & Flower 167). Targeting students and teachers as well, Haas and Flower managed to develop an article that explains and shows us some misconception of our daily writing life that should be known by everybody. They make questions towards students asking if they really gather all the information that is available in the articles, and if they are available to print them on their writings. Some of the students use a strategy called “rhetorical reading” to get the most out of the texts but only experienced readers managed to use this skill as supposed to. Freshman readers and experienced readers are mentioned and evaluated with the same article, comparing their results, Haas & Flower observed that experienced readers could get more juice out of the readings due to the experience and the previous knowledge in the area.…

First Reading: “Don’t You Think It’s Time to Start Thinking?” By Northrop Frye Frye (year?) is talking about critical thinking as a means in which to discern the difference between reading and writing for basic knowledge, and the more effective use of articulated methods of reading and writing as way of expressing more complex thought processes: “Most students need to be taught, very carefully and patiently, that there is no such thing as an inarticulate idea waiting to have the right words wrapped around it” (Frye para.4). This form of “articulation” presents the need for reading and writing as a foundation for critical thinking and an objective way to communicate with others. Therefore, reading and writing are tools for critical thinking about the society in which people communicate with each other on a daily basis.…

Chapter eight highlights the importance of student’s prior knowledge, purposes of reading, and provides strategies to be used before, during, and after reading. Students must learn reading comprehension because without it reading does not provide the reader with any information. As a future educator, I will teach reading comprehension so I can help my students develop the knowledge, abilities, and experiences to become enthusiastic readers. Activating and using background knowledge is important to reading comprehension. I agree with the author that if readers have not been exposed to a writer’s language patterns, or to the objects and theories the writer discusses, then the students’ comprehension is incomplete.…

Thinking and reading critically were very important this whole course. Thinking and reading critically were something you would have to do in every assignment that was given. The Saint Mary’s seminar classes are so unlike traditional teacher-centered learning. The Western Tradition II focuses on three learning goals; shared inquiry, critical thinking, and written and oral communication.
