“Elexis, your birthday is in February, there is no way we can have your party at the zoo.” This line would be repeated throughout my household from the beginning of January until February 20th, ten days after my birthday had already passed. The zoo is a thrilling place for a kid; fantastic animals all around them running and playing, lions roaring and polar bears swimming in the little pools in their enclosures. These are common memories children have when looking back on their trips to the zoo, but as they grow up they realize how much their memories have failed them. When a child grows into a parent running around the zoo with their own children they notice how sluggish the animals truly are. The lions are no longer roaring, but instead, laying in the shade sleeping, and the polar bears are pacing the enclosure helplessly. This is because the zoo is not the happy place it appears to be, but instead a form on confinement that does not even give its prisoners their basic needs.
