Memorial Day became a federal holiday in 1888 and represents a day of memory for soldier’s who lost their lives during the Civil War (Stathis 4). Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894 as a day to honor workers and to provide them with a day of relaxation and recreation. Martin Luther King is an important American holiday because it honors the efforts of a great African American leader (King 14). King’s efforts led to the obtainment of civil liberties and freedoms for all African Americans.
American holidays are not just a days of celebration; however, but important days of commemoration and remembrance. American holidays are an important tradition in American society. When important events impact American history or great people create major social change, they are honored with national holidays. Not all Americans are free from working on federal holidays, but if they do have to work, they are afforded additional pay. American holidays are enacted by Congress and represent a time for fellowship relaxation, and
