Since animals are not the same as the human body, this can mislead scientists. For example, thalidomide was a sleeping pill in the 1950s. It was tested on animals before it went on the market to ensure its safety but did not include the effects the drug would have during pregnancy. Over 10,000 babies were born with severe deformities due to this drug being used by their mothers. In 2004, Vioxx is an arthritis drug that was tested on animals that also resulted in a major consequence on the users. Although the drugs seemed to have protected the hearts of mice, it cause over 27,000 heart attacks and sudden cardiac deaths before it could be pulled off the shelves (Report: Vioxx Linked to Thousands of Deaths, 2004). These situations prove that not every drug that passes tests with animals will be safe for human …show more content…
This act was signed in 1966 to regulate the treatment of animals in research, transportation, display, and by dealers. While undercover, the Humane Society found 338 likely violations of the Animal Welfare Act in Louisiana at the New Iberia Research Center. Some of the animals that were kept in this facility showed extreme psychological stress to the point where they self-mutilated themselves. Infant chimps were found screaming as they were forced away from their mothers, they were seen awake during painful experiments, and older chimps were shot at with a dart
