Why Andrew Simmons's Why Poetry Is So Important?

There are numerous reasons that poetry is currently not ranked the foremost crucial subject in high schools. The noteworthiness of poetry is largely subjective to personal opinion due to its open nature, the environment in which it is taught environment, and its implications. “I am a literature teacher who barely teaches it”(Simmons 1). The author of “Why Teaching Poetry Is So Important” Andrew Simmons contradicts his position on the importance by in his first sentence stating that he barely teaches the in his opinion most important subject to teach students. Poetry is subjective to the reader and it is often introduced in a learning environment hence many students dislike it but not all do. Andrew Simmonds states” I loved poetry in high school. I wrote it. I read it” ( Simmons 1) so he is apparently biased towards his claim. The students that enjoy poetry usually do so out of literature class because there is no pressure and they do it for enjoyment and not for a grade. It is due to the open nature for interpretation poems give the reader that …show more content…
This is mostly due to the fact that schools usually teach older poetry including the sonnets of William Shakespeare. Poems like these can be puzzling to say the least. Students find it is hard to stop thinking in a literal way since students are trained to analyse texts in a logical and literal way, this becomes a burden when a student is assigned a poem to analyze since poems are often not to be taken literal. Poetry is also not necessarily the best way to teach students who are learning “english as a second language” ( Simmons 1) sine poets sometimes use archaic grammar rules and spelling like in Shakespeare's sonnet XXVI the use of “thine” in line 7. Prolonged exposure to the use of such old grammar would have a negative effect on students learning the english language. These issues can be evaded by teaching modern

What is poetry? A variety of answers are likely to emerge when you ask this question. According to Merriam Webster, poetry is defined as, “Metrical writing; writing that formulates a concentrated imaginative awareness of experience in language chosen and arranged to create a specific emotional response through meaning, sound, and rhythm.” An author can have a set purpose of writing something, but everyone interprets readings differently. Any work, in which the speaker is telling a story that evokes emotion from its reader; the writing does not have to any set, specific emotion that the reader is supposed to feel, a change in wording or style of writing can cause someone to look at that section different; that is what poetry is to me.…

Is poetry banal? I had always thought poetry was the most boring topic to study at school, I just hated analysing old poems and explaining their meaning. But one day, I was listening to one of my favourite artists, Ed Sheeran, and I realised that even songs nowadays contain poetry, conveying a myriad of feelings and emotions. They have deep meanings and by reading the lyrics can be understood and appreciated. The quote “sentiment and language are not defunct in the 21st century” by McFadden is absolutely correct.…

In elementary school, I was obsessed with poetry; or, what I considered to be poetry. Really, I was just obsessed with Shel Silverstein. At every visit to the school library, I would rush to the poetry section and look for the thick, white, plastic binding of any Silverstein collection. It didn’t matter if I’d already checked out the book three or four times already, as long as it was different than the one I had just replaced on the metal return cart. I didn’t really have a favorite collection.…

Poetry is a way for people to express their inner most thoughts and feelings. When I read poems, I feel as if I can feel exactly what the author is feeling. Edward Hirsch believes “a reader of poetry is a kind of pilgrim setting out, setting forth” as explained in his article, “To the Reader Setting Out”. Hirsch compared a reader to a pilgrim in his article. In his article, he stated, “Reading poetry is an adventure in renewal, a creative act, a perpetual beginning, a rebirth of wonder.”…

It has been more than 400 years since Shakespeare’s death, yet students today are still reading his works. Why aren’t students reading something that wasn’t even written in modern English? One reason why we still read Shakespeare is because the issues that he brings up are still relevant in our society today. For example, in Romeo and Juliet, the theme of love and lust is brought up. People nowadays are still suckers for a love/tragedy story and Romeo and Juliet is an extremely well written and gut-wrenching one.…

I agree it helps bring the poem to life but it limits the power the poem can have as well. To maximize the impact a poem can have is by reading the poem first and creating a personal interpretation before hearing the poet’s interpretation. By creating your own judgements, as an individual, you can see what you can take out of the poem. How the poem makes you feel and regard the world. Listening to the poet’s take on it limits the audience’s opinion on it.…
