“It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.” -Mark Twain. This quote expresses one of the reasons why the Americans (and allied forces) won the won the Revolutionary War. The Patriots were inspired and propelled by the idea of independence, and their lives and ideals were at stake, whereas the British were too cocky and only fought for money. This made a huge difference in the war, because although the British army was much larger than the Patriot army, the “fight in the dog” made all the difference. In other words, the British weren’t very passionate about the war, and they did not personally care much about the outcome. The Patriots were allied with the French, Spanish, and the Dutch. The French, was their most involved ally that officially joined in February 6, 1778, and they contributed many things, such as; 1) They provided a navy to trap Cornwallis’s army in Yorktown, that helped to counted the British’s powerful navy and created a “blockade” that was essential to the siege. 2) Many people in France that were motivated by the movement in the colonies volunteered to join the American army, the most important, Lafayette. He provided confidence for the Patriots, and became a close friend of George Washington and helped him to be more open to ideas and people. 3) The French sent over 12,000 troops and 32,00 sailors to support the Americans in many the battles. 4) The French sent artillery and other supplies to the soldiers. Spain was also an ally for the Patriots. They had been sending ammunition, weapons, and other supplies since April 1776, but they officially entered the war in 1778. They also sent troops to America that helped in multiple battles. The Dutch assisted the colonists from 1776, and they officially entered the war in 1780, although they had many losses because of the war and did not gain much at all.
