Why Am I Volunteer

Improved Essays
If I am going to be honest I have not done a lot of service/volunteering throughout my high school experience. I am a full time competitive swimmer and I swim about 16 hours a week and it is very hard for me to make time to volunteer in my community. As my high school years are coming to an end I want to make it a goal to volunteer more and make time even when I think I do not have any time. I feel guilty because I am so fortunate to live the life I have and I need to give back to those who have nothing and are suffering. I know I am very busy with academics and my sport, but it is time for me to take a step back and realize there are lots of little things I could do to help community or someone in need. At a young age, I was taught to do things for the greater good, my family has always given back whether it is donating food and clothes or adopting a family for Christmas. Growing up I have received assistance because at times my mother and I needed help so I personally know how much of an impact a small act of kindness can have and that is why I decided to join the Bakersfield Police Explorer program, which is community service based volunteer work. Getting into this program required various steps such as entrance testing, background check, and an interview. I wanted to be apart of this program as a way to test the waters of a career in law enforcement, helping out in the community, and to develop as a person.…

A veteran to me is a patriotic, unselfish, brave, and courageous person, who would sacrifice time from their families to serve and protect our nation. As Jeff Miller once said, “The willingness of America’s Veterans to sacrifice for our country has earned them our lasting gratitude.” Veterans from every country have served throughout many wars. They have put their blood, sweat, and effort into doing the right and beneficial thing for their nation. Being a veteran means not only to serve in the military, but it means to have the selflessness and courage to go off to war to ensure the freedom of the nation.…

Every week, I always attend the meeting that presents new opportunities for community service. Some volunteer events that I have participated in over the course of the past two years are the Tualatin Food Pantry, Race for the Cure, Project Jumpstart, and the student store. Some ways I offer service outside of school is by being assistant to an art teacher every week and volunteering at the Beaverton Foodbank occasionally. I work with elementary aged kids that have an interest in art. At the beginning and end of each class, I will set up examples of sketches and books where the children can get inspiration from and also put out the supplies that the children will need such as paper, pencils of various lead hardness, paints, or paint…

"It's every man for himself", a quote that I more or less went by. Truth be told, I wasn't always one to care about the wellbeing of the community. My wellbeing was my main focus. The thoughtof doing volunteer service never crossed my mind, until it became mandatory, in order to be inducted in the National Honor Society. After participating in a few projects and events, from what seemed to be a tedious activity turned out to be a rewarding experience.…

Jane Addams: I cannot trace the trail back to the day I wanted to start doing service-learning. I have always been involved in my community and doing different activities for organizations. I know that while I was growing up I was a part of many different service projects. One thing my family always did was bag up our old clothes and donate them every couple of months and I would always raid our cabinets for food drives. One of my favorite things to do as a child was to pick out a few different children during the Christmas season to give toys too.…

I started building my foundation for community service back in fifth grade with Girl Scouts. My troop volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House, read to kindergartners, and organized food at the food pantry. I continued these acts all the way up through eighth grade. In high school, I joined Key Club, where I sold flowers for powder puff, volunteered at my elementary school’s Trunk or Treat, and helped with the book and coat drive. Outside of school, I continued serving in my church through events like VBS.…

Following training, I commenced my role as a hands-on-care volunteer at DFCI. I currently provide cancer patients with hand massage as they undergo their infusion. IVs are often placed in various regions of the hand so I learn to adapt to differing circumstances to maximize the care and relaxation each patient receives.…

The pillars of National Honor Society, Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character, have greatly influenced my goals and self-expectations. Throughout my academic career, I have been fortunate to grasp new concepts quickly without much effort. Despite how blessed I am to have this ability, I do not rely solely on its advantages. I enjoy fully understanding new concepts, not simply learning enough to achieve an A. In this way, I believe I do pursue the quest for knowledge, rather than just the reward and thereby have implemented the Scholarship pillar in my education.…

In order to raise money for prom this year, I accompanied the class of 2019, for 5.5 hours, to a west point game and worked in concessions. I had a great experience working with my peers to achieve a goal that would benefit the senior class. Recently I have engaged in service with my church, for 4 hours, helping to move furniture while they were switching locations. From this experience I learned that sacrificing my time for a communal effort may seem minuscule, but ultimately helps increase efficiency. Also I volunteered at the annual Easter egg hunt at memorial park last weekend for 3.5 hours.…
