Gender inequality is a major problem on why this issue has gotten so much attention. There are a few states in the United States that have abolished this tax and gotten rid of this gender injustice. According to California assembly women Cristina Garcia she states "The reality is, these institutions of power are male-dominated. It's either they're not thinking about it, or they're afraid to approach it" (p.3). Why are people afraid of this issue? As a society women are not encouraged to talk openly about their menstrual cycle and it’s a topic that makes most men uncomfortable. Women are being taxed for something that is out of their control it’s something they carry in their biology as women. The Chicago Tribune writes, “Women's outcry over this issue isn't just about the tax on tampons. It's a reflection of the routine unfairness that seeps into our everyday lives, at the end of the day, the tampon tax movement is one small way to challenge the broader sexism that still persists.
