Trait approach: Nomothetic approach. The nomothetic approach to the trait approach says that individuals have both common traits, which are commonly seen among many different individuals, and secondary traits, which are more an individual’s personality. The common traits are more commonly known as the Big Five: neuroticism, extraversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness.

Some of Escobar’s main traits were: dominating, loving (to family), ambition, conscientiousness, and achievement. Escobar was such a high achiever, he had so much ambition that he wanted to own everything, dominate everything. One of Pablo’s biggest weaknesses was also one of his main traits, his love for his family would end up being his downfall, but also held him together for many years emotionally before his capture. Escobar also had the cardinal trait of Machiavellianism, which showed with how he wanted to not only become the largest drug lord in Colombia, he also wanted to be president, and the savior of the people who adored him. To assess Escobar’s personality, one could give him the Minnesota Multi-Phasic Personality Inventory—2nd edition (MMPI-II), the NEO-FFI Personality inventory, or the Myers Briggs Type Indicator. The most general out of these three tests is the Myers Briggs, which gives you a basic personality type that extends to lots of different traits that are often true about those kinds of individuals. This tests, while giving good general feedback won’t fully inventory the anyone’s personality to the extent that the NEO or MMPI-II will. The Myers Briggs would still give us good useful information about Escobar, just not as thorough as it could be.
