Who Was Responsible For Mercutio's Death

Mercutio’s death is one of many deaths in Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, although it is the most controversial. You could say it was Tybalt’s fault or Mercutio’s, there are many to blame, but most of the blame goes much farther back. The first main person to blame is Tybalt. If he never showed up, there would never have been a fight, if he never stabbed Mercutio he wouldn’t have died. If he wasn’t so antsy to fight anyone anywhere, then he would have restrained himself from attacking Mercutio. Some minor blames related to Tybalt attacking him would be Lord Capulet, Romeo, and Mercutio. If lord Capulet could have restrained Tybalt at the party, Tybalt wouldn’t have a grudge against Romeo. If Romeo didn’t show up and get between them, Mercutio may not have been left wide open for Tybalt to stab him. …show more content…
The second main person to blame is Mercutio for a multitude of reasons. He didn’t know how to keep his mouth shut and not taunt Tybalt, he should have let Tybalt and Romeo settle their dispute, if he never dragged them to the Capulet party in the first place, Tybalt would never have seen Romeo, therefore not have a grudge against him. Mercutio’s taunting probably angered Tybalt causing them to fight, if he never antagonized him, he may have lived. Minor people to blame are, Romeo, the prince, Tybalt, and Benvolio. If Romeo wasn’t his friend at all, Mercutio would never have stood up for him, and Romeo was the one that got in front of him. The prince is to blame because he couldn’t control his cousin, if he could, Mercutio wouldn’t have

The role of the artist in society is often a tragic one; the lives of the artists of the past generally revolved around living a life of poverty in order to showcase their ideas to society. Artists who openly expressed unpopular ideas were punished (could suffer negative reception) while the rest (some) succumbed to drugs or illness. In the scene following his fatal wounding by Tybalt, Mercutio’s statement “ask for me tomorrow, and you shall find me a grave man,” depicts the vulnerability of artists at the time by using the homonym on grave to suggests his future of either being miserable or dead. In a previous scene, Mercutio’s poeticising of Queen Mab “Sometime she driveth o'er a soldier’s neck,…

Particularly, Romeo is at fault because, as a character, he makes rash decisions that result in inferior consequences in the future. Notably, he neglects to tell his parents that he plans to marry Juliet; therefore, he creates a situation in which no one is aware that Romeo and Juliet are wedded. Another key point is that Romeo kills Tybalt for revenge when Tybalt slays Mercutio in the streets of Verona. Earlier in the first act the Prince of Verona notifies the Capulets and Montagues that if they were to ever fight in the streets again than the families would have to pay with their lives. Consequently, Romeo did not assess the seriousness of the situation, and he fought Tybalt in the streets.…

The next reason why Tybalt is to blame for both of the deaths is because of what he says affects what happens to them. As Romeo enters the room Tybalt calls Romeo a villain meaning that he started throwing insults first and that Romeo is evil in his perspective. As they talk Tybalt says to Romeo “Therefore turn and draw” (3.1.63) which shows that Tybalt was first to say that he wanted to start a fight first, before Mercutio did. Even though some may believe that Mercutio is to blame for the deaths, most of the evidence points to tybalt because of his actions, feelings and what he says. Although Mercutio insults tybalt first by saying he is a rat catcher.…

The first reason that Tybalt was the one to blame for the deaths was that, when Romeo and his friends went to the Capulet party, Tybalt saw him and thought it was a disgrace that he was there and when he told his uncle, he didn’t really mind that he was there and scorn Tybalt in which angered him more. “What, dares the slave come hither, covered with an antic face, to flee and scorn at our solemnity? Now, by the stock and honor of my kin, to strike him head I hold it not a sin.” I.V.55-57.…

Mercutio is an interesting character. But, a major reason why Mercutio takes part of the blame for the tragedy is his tendency to take risks, or more specifically, the fact that Mercutio decided to partake in a feast held by the Montagues greatest enemy. Although many could argue that this was Benvolio’s idea, it must not be forgotten that Benvolio is the only character in the book that can reason maturely, therefore Benvolio would have eventually changed his mind once he realizes the consequences or risks. But, then there is Mercutio, he openly goes to disregard Romeo’s…
