Who Was Responsible For Macbeth's Downfall

Macbeth is the most responsible for the tragic events that occur in the play. His ambition leads him to kill others, the power of kingship corrupted him, and he leads to his own death due to overconfidence. Macbeth is brave and loyal at the beginning of the play, but after he hears the prophecies from the witches that he will be the king, he wants to murder the king to get the kingship, “My thought, whose murder yet is but fantastical, / Shakes so my single state of man / That function is smothered in surmise, / And nothing is but what is now.”(Collections, page 221) Although his kindness would stop him to reach the throne by murder, but Lady Macbeth encourages and persuades him to murder King Duncan. When Macbeth sees the ghost of Banquo in the banquet, he is upset because he did not murder Banquo by himself. Macbeth’s actions make other nobles to suspect him because nobody can see the apparition but Macbeth. He decides to meet the witches to know more about the prophecies, the witches tell him to become resolute and he thinks he is invincible. He sends murderers to Macduff, the son of Duncan’s castle, and kill Macduff’s wife and children. Regardless Lady Macbeth persuades Macbeth to murder King Duncan before, but Macbeth demands the murderers to murder Banquo and Macduff’s family without telling Lady Macbeth, and he thinks these violent murders can help him to prevent antagonists.
