Macbeth, a play by William Shakespeare, is a story about a tragic hero who destroys his fate by selfish ambitions and the influences of the women in his life. Macbeth’s fall is mainly caused by him choosing to listen to the women in his life. At the beginning of the play, Macbeth appears to be a loyal, honest and brave nobleman. However, his character is influenced by other characters in the play. These characters have influenced his decisions, but in the end he is solely responsible for his own fate. The key factors that lead to Macbeth’s downfall are the influences of Lady Macbeth, the three witches prophecies, and Macbeth’s own ambitions. At the beginning of the play her character immediately presents a very ambitious and manipulative women. “That I may pour my spirits in thine ear And chastise with the valor of my tongue.” (Act I Scene 5). She seems to want the power more than him and tells him to hurry home so she can persuade him and talk him out of whatever it is that is keeping him from going after the crown. Macbeth has a thought that the only way to become king is to kill the king, but he tries hard to reject this thought by telling himself to just let fate run its course and if fate wants him to be king then it will happen. “If chance will have me king, why, chance may crown me Without my stir.” (Act I Scene 3). Lady Macbeth believed that since two of the witches prophecies had already came true, that the other must. So she instigates Macbeth’s thought with her greedy power thirsty mind trying to manipulate him. Macbeth then decides that he is going to go through with the plan for the love of his wife. After killing the king, Macbeth starts to regret his evil doing; however, now killing seems to be the only answer to cover up his wrong doings or lose everything he has worked so hard for. Lady Macbeth has influenced Macbeth to show his true colors by guilting him into something she herself could not even
