Who Was Responsible For Macbeth's Downfall

Macbeth was always doomed. Macbeth’s ambition, impressionability, and confidence make him a tragic hero of this story. A tragic hero is one of noble beginnings whose flaws become their weaknesses and are the downfall of their story. Shakespeare used this theme to compare human imperfections to Macbeth’s tragedy. Macbeth blindly accepted all of the witches prophecies. After hearing the witches prophecies Macbeth, unlike Banquo, decided to act upon his destiny. Macbeth was overconfident in himself that lead to his death. Macbeth was not a substandard person, his initial character was well respected and prized, it was his tragic flaws that caused his downfall and not only that but the way he used those flaws in the negative instead of to his benefit. …show more content…
Macbeth let what had the potential to be strong qualities take over and got lost in his flaws. Macbeth is honoured by the King, praised by his wife and respected by his friends. Had Macbeth used his flaws in a more beneficial way to him, he would have been the conqueror in this story. Macbeth even said, “Stepp’d in so far, that, should I wade no more,/ Returning were as tedious as go o’er ” (3.4.167-168). Macbeth felt he had gone so far in his river of blood he could not return. In the book, On The Design Of Shakespearean Tragedy, by H.S Wilson he says “Macbeth knows well why he should not say ‘Amen,’ why he should scorn to pronounce it, if he could think clearly”(Pg 72). Wilson is saying that Macbeth knew what he was doing was wrong, he had a conscious to tell him he knew better and he ignored it. This is a perfect example of how someone can get so lost in their flaws that they feel they cannot come back from
