Hip- hop has been one of the most hated and most loved genres of music since the late 70s. Some of the most popular artists were associated with hip-hop. Also, some of the most disliked artist were associated with hip-hop. This music has grown to get more popular over the years and is very famous to this generation. Being such a big thing for teenagers and adults, many debatable topics come up about hip-hop. Many people ask the question of who does hip-hop belong to. I believe that hip-hop belongs to everyone since it’s the people who support the artists, just about every race and ethnicity has had a role in it, and the fans are the ones who make the genre and artists what it is today. The most successful rap album of all time, The Marshall Mathers LP by Eminem, sold 10.6 million copies and there is no way the album would be so popular if it wasn’t for those 10.6 million people who bought it and by buying it they were giving support. Some artists would be no where if it wasn’t for the support of their fans making them gain popularity and success. Kendrick Lamar said in his Grammy acceptance speech "I would like to thank my fans and supporters first for all the love and help they’ve given me and I wouldn’t be up on this stage if it were not for them" (Gonchar 1). He just said he would not be up there if it were not for them so that shows he believes Hip-Hop belongs to the people. Even if people say it’s the artists who made the music so they should have the rights to say they own it, fans are the reason they get famous.
