In the book, Who Moved My Cheese, Dr. Spencer Johnson illustrates the dangers of individuals, leaders, and organizations sticking to the same old things even in the face of a changing landscape. The author elucidates on this topic by presenting four characters: two mice named Sniff and Scurry and two small people named Hem and Haw. The characters live in a giant maze where they leave each morning to enjoy cheese which has always been around the corner from where they live. As the book progresses, the cheese supply gradually dwindles and eventually runs out altogether. The mice immediately go in search of new cheeses, but the human beings feel conflicted and frightened at the fact of their cheese depleting. They cling to their emotions and are crippled by the change before them. Their routine and comforted lives made them oblivious to the changes in their cheese supply and seemingly lost the skill and drive required to find new cheeses (unlike the mice). Eventually, one of the people (Haw) breaks his cycle of denial and goes out on his own to find cheese. After much trial and error, he eventually finds a new place with an abundance of cheese, but learns from his previous mistakes by being hyper aware of his cheese supply (taking stock of it daily), while also trying to find future cheeses supplies.
