Change is one of the elements in life which remains constant. In Dr. Spencer Johnson’s book Who Moved My Cheese, he introduces change by starting with a gathering of high school classmates. The classmates gather for lunch the day after they have their class reunion. During this lunch, they talk about how their life changed. Most of them agree life is not how they once dreamed it would be. They then go on to talk about change. From this talk they gather that change is often resistant because people are afraid. One of the guys named Nathan explains that he learned the biggest lesson about change from a story. As the chapter about the gathering ends, Nathan starts telling the story called Who Moved My Cheese (Johnson, 1998).
The story begins in a maze which is home to two mice named “Sniff” and “Scurry”, and tow little people named “Hem” and “Haw”. The mice and the little people run daily through this maze in search for their version of cheese. These quotes serve as a catalyst to all those who get discouraged. Those quotes taught me to: not get bitter or lazy, never give up, always embrace change, the simple ways are often the better methods to solve problems, expect problems, and to prepare for problems to come. Change is definitely a constant. Even when I least expect change, it shows up and it is up to me to use that change to become wiser and stronger. Once Nathan finished telling the story, he and his classmates met up later to discuss the story. When they met up, everyone joined in and began to tell their cheese stories. They realized that they sometimes scurried and even sniffed into bad situations because they were unprepared and not ready for change. Like them, I realize that change is good
