The narrator in “Who, Me a Bum” uses the idea of protest to show how little apathy people have for one another. The narrator shows protest as a “bad” action, he acknowledges that protesting helps him to feel “human” again however he knows that protesting against a person for committing suicide shows a lack of humanity. In a way, he mocks himself, the guy going to work and the person who committed suicide in his own protest. The narrator talks about the guy who committed suicide having no respect for those who have to get to work on time, although she personally has no job. The White people residing in South Africa are usually well to do and do not build friendships or relationships with the Black people. Whereas the Black people living in South Africa are poor due to a lack of resources and education. For many years, by law Black and White South Africans were not allowed to marry and if they did their families would shun them. The social aspects within Cape Town, South Africa relate to Frieda and Michael 's relationship because Freida is Black and poor while Michael is White and well to do. Although they love each other they keep their relationship hidden specifically because Freida is afraid of what were family will do if they knew she was dating a White man. So, when Freida finds herself pregnant the only choice she believes she has is to terminate the pregnancy. While traveling to the doctor 's office to obtain an abortion Freida thinks about her life and how lost she feels. She feels torn between her White boyfriend and her family. She knows that getting an abortion may ruin her relationship with Michael but she also doesn’t want to risk having her family stop talking to her. A martyr is someone who is killed due to their beliefs, Pandy was not killed due to her own beliefs nor was she helping better people through a movement. If Pandy had taken her wealth and created a program to help drug addicts get clean or helped drug addicts get into rehab and was murdered due to her program then, someone could argue that she was a martyr. However, all she did was live in a shabby apartment and get high with other people. Pandy ignored her wealth and did drugs with people who did not have the same types of resources as she did, in all reality she made their lives worse by helping and encouraging them to do drugs.
