Margot Macomber is guilty in the murder of her husband Francis because she clearly meant to pull the trigger of the loaded rifle while aiming at Francis, this is shown by the events leading up the murder. Since she was committing adultery she was worried he would find out or she fell in love with Robert Wilson and wanted her old lover dead.
Ever since the trip started, Margot had been in love with Robert Wilson. Robert was the tour guide. He was a much more confident man than Margot’s husband, Francis. Margot seemed truly sincere in the moment. “‘There's a hell of a lot to be done,’he said. ‘And I'll have to send a truck off to the lake to wireless for a plane to take the three of us into Nairobi. Why didn't you poison him? That's what they do in England.’” "’Stop it. Stop it. Stop it,’ the woman cried.” Here Robert tries telling Margot that there were many other ways she could’ve killed him. This implies that they had a plan to get rid of him. Even then, she is crying and telling him to stop. But, could this all have been good acting? I belive so. It was a blatant plan to murder

Once the criminals associated with the killing of the Clutter family is revealed, Holcomb’s population is noticeably dissatisfied with the revelation, which is conveyed by Capote inserting a conversation between the town’s people regarding their feelings towards who was responsible. However, Wilson is not surprised by this action and begins to make certain comments suggesting that Margot shot Francis on purpose. Although there is no background information on Margot about whether she is a sharp shooter or not, Oliver’s selection, “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber”, points out that many critics believe that the 6.5 Mannlicher had too much recoil for Margot to deliberately shoot her husband. Having said that, Oliver states that the “Mannlicher weighed only 6.5 pounds and had a ‘light recoil,’ according to early 20th-century African safari guides” (“The Short Happy Life”). This would make it fairly easy for Margot to shoot Francis. After the incident occurs, Wilson becomes just as suspicious as Margot.…
