Welcome members of the jury; the defendant stands accused of defamation. Mr. Bob Ewell slandered not only Mr. Tom Robinson but his whole family, including his wife Helen Robinson. Mr. Bob Ewell falsely accused Tom Robinson and gave false testimony at the Tom Robinson Rape trial, because he did want the blame for what happened to Ms. Mayella Ewell to be placed on him. Mr. Bob Ewell told Mr. Heck Tate that Tom Robinson raped Mayella. Mr Ewell claimed, “‘I ran up to the window and I saw–’ He stood up and pointed his finger at Tom Robinson. ‘--I seen that black n**** yonder ruttin’ on my Mayella’” (Lee 196). After Tom was accused, the people of Maycomb said, “Helen’s got three little guns and she can’t go out to work. Helen’s finding it hard to get to work these days” (Lee 140). …show more content…
Bob Ewell accused him of rapin’ his girl and had him arrested and put in jail. Folks aren’t anxious to–to have anything to do with any of his family” (Lee 140). My fourth evidence is, “I asked her who hurt her and she said it was Tom Robinson” (Lee 190). My last piece of evidence is “When he turned around to take the oath, we saw that his face was as red as his neck (Lee 193)”. By accusing Tom Robinson of raping his daughter Mayella, Bob Ewell seeks to cover up his abusive behavior towards Mayella. Bob Ewell, as a white man, wielded his privilege and power to falsely implicate Tom Robinson, a black man, in a crime he did not commit. Bob Ewell's false testimony not only ruins Tom Robinson's life, but also perpetuates racial prejudice and injustice in the community of Maycomb. The defendant's legal team may claim that Bob Ewell only made claims that he knew as true. That was Ms. Mayella Ewell, who originally accused Tom Robison.
