Although there are many characters who were involved in the death of Romeo and Juliet, it is Romeo who deserves the greatest blame for their deaths. Although he deserves the greatest blame it was his impulsiveness rather than any deliberate malice which precipitated his tragic demise as well as that of his wife. Romeo and Juliet died in the Capulet tomb. They were there because of the plan enacted to remedy Romeo’s banishment, and reunite him with Juliet. If Romeo had not been banished from Verona, Juliet might still have been forced into marrying Paris, but this time Romeo would know the details of the plan. He would not recklessly kill himself, they might have been forced to flee Verona, but Romeo and Juliet could have lived long, happy, lives. Instead Romeo dueled Tybalt, and what was the fight for? Mercutio, Romeo’s dear friend, had been killed, but was it necessary for Romeo to dole out justice? The prince had declared that the peace must be kept “on pain of torture”. Mercutio’s death lightened Romeo’s sentence, but Tybalt would have been imprisoned and tortured. Romeo should have simply waited for the prince to arrest Tybalt. It is true that without the Friar’s plan Juliet would never have even appeared to be dead. If the feud between the Montagues and Capulets had not been so great Romeo and Juliet might have married publicly, but ultimately none of that matters. Romeo and Juliet killed themselves of their own volition. Before his death Romeo declared“Here’s to my love!” and “Thus with a kiss I die.” Juliet proclaims “O happy dagger! This is thy sheath; there rust, and let me die.” Clearly they killed themselves of their own volition. It is they alone who are culpable for their deaths.
