The Role Of Blame In Romeo And Juliet

Improved Essays
Blame is to place responsibility or fault on another person. People resort to blame as a defence mechanism, because it can be easier to blame someone than take responsibility for their own actions. We also use blame to attack or to intentionally hurt one another. Blame is a large part of the play Romeo and Juliet, because no person wants to take responsibility for their actions of being a factor in Romeo and Juliet’s death so they start blaming other people out of their guilt. Blame gets pointed at Friar Laurence and Capulet for Romeo and Juliet’s death, because Friar Laurence marries Romeo and Juliet, and Capulet has been abusive to Juliet her whole life.
One blame factor of Romeo and Juliet’s death is at the hand of Friar Laurence. Friar

Capulet can be blamed for Juliet's death, because he makes her feel like she is worthless to the family. After Juliet tells Lady Capulet that she will not marry Paris, Capulet goes into Juliet's room and tells her that she needs to marry him, because it will bring him more power and a higher social class. He also says that if she refused he would never acknowledge her again. This demonstrates that Capulet only wants to use Juliet to get more power and how Capulet only cares about his social status, and not his family. Capulet tells Juliet that she is unwanted and unworthy of her family. Capulet screams at Juliet and says she is lucky he could find a man that was willing to marry her, and how she is unworthy of Paris and her family. This indicates that Capulet is using Juliet and trying to make her feel bad so she will marry Paris and make Capulet's social status higher. Capulet says that Juliet is a curse and not a blessing to him. During Capulet’s anger he tells Lady Capulet that God “blessed” them with one child but he proceeds to say that she is not a blessing and that she is a curse. Capulet is making it clear to Juliet that if she does not marry Paris she will be disowned. As a result of Capulet's behavior, Juliet feels trapped so she goes to Friar Laurence to seek help, which leads up to her …show more content…
Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend said, "We live in a culture of blame. People will blame anyone or anything for their misery sooner than take the responsibility to own it and make it better" (It's Not My Fault: The No-Excuse Plan for Overcoming Life's Obstacles). This quote is explaining how people are willing to throw others under the bus for their own protection, and how the person is making the situation worse for themselves rather than taking responsibility for their actions. This quote supports the fact that Friar Laurence and Capulet are at fault of Romeo and Juliet's death, because the friar knew that Juliet was in a deep state of sleep and he tells Capulet at her funeral that it is his fault is daughter is dead because of the way he treated her. Also he agreed to marry Romeo to Juliet when he knew it would cause an uproar of problems. Capulet was a fault, because he makes Juliet feel worthless and alone by the way he treats her, and he put blame on timing and not himself. This thesis agrees with the quote, because it shows how Friar Laurence and Capulet played the blame game, because they knew there would be backlash from the public They also understood that if they told the truth there would be severe consequences for their

Capulet raised Juliet in a way to make her feel unworthy and that her only importance is to move her family higher on the social hierarchy. His actions made Juliet resort to finding an escape from her arranged marriage and poor home life. The movie and play imply that Capulet’s actions and words toward Juliet are unfatherly and cruel. For example, when he finds his daughter sobbing, presumably about Tybalt’s death, he makes an attempt to hit her, but is blocked by the nurse. His lack of affection…

In consequence, when he reprimands Tybalt, his fiery nephew retaliates with “I will withdraw, but this intrusion shall now seeming sweet, convert to bitterest gall.” This line foreshadows the upcoming plights caused by Romeo’s encounter at the Capulet party. As such, if Lord Capulet would be less stubborn and heed Tybalt's warning this story would not have its bitter end. Then, later in the play, Capulet arranges for Juliet to marry count Paris, though she does not wish to. When Capulet learns of this he berates his daughter and tells her to "get thee to church o'thursday / or never look me in the face." It is predominantly because of Capulet's lack of leniency shown in the quote that forces Juliet to turn to Friar Lawrence for a solution. As a result, the plan that kills the two lovers was set in motion.…

Lady Juliet Capulet came to his cell for help because her beloved Romeo was banished. In an attempt to get them back together, the Friar gave young Juliet a potion that would put her into a sleep that appeared as death until Romeo came and then she would be awake. When giving Juliet the potion the Friar told her his plan, “Each part, deprived of supple government,/Shall, stiff and stark and cold, appear like death./And in this borrowed likeness of shrunk death/Thou shalt continue two and forty hours,/And then awake as from a pleasant sleep./Now, when the bridegroom in the morning comes/To rouse thee from thy bed, there art thou dead./Then, as the manner of our country is,/In thy best robes uncovered on the bier/Thou shalt be borne to that same ancient vault/Where all the kindred of the Capulets lie./In the meantime, against thou shalt awake,/Shall Romeo by my letters know our drift,/And hither shall he come, and he and I/Will watch thy waking, and that very night/Shall Romeo bear thee hence to Mantua./And this shall free thee from this present shame,/If no inconstant toy, nor womanish fear,/Abate thy valor in the acting it” (IV. i. 105-120). Friar Laurence made this plan to get Romeo and Juliet back together, which ultimately led to their deaths. Mainly because of this reason, Friar Laurence should be considered guilty for the horrific deaths of Romeo and Juliet.…

In William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet, Lord Capulet is partially to blame for the tragedy due to his inconsideration of his daughter’s opinions and feelings, however Friar Laurence takes most of the blame because of his failed plan to reunite the couple and his well-intentioned, but disastrous decision to marry them in the first place. Lord Capulet, although formally wanting Juliet’s consent to marry Paris, now threatens to disown her if she refuses. He expresses his disappointment and rage towards Juliet by furiously stating, “I tell thee what-get thee to church a’ Thursday Or never after look me in the face. Speak not, reply not, do not answer me” (III.v.162-164).…

The Montague versus Capulet feud is an ongoing theme in the play that eventually leads to Romeo and Juliet’s deaths. There is tension between the Capulet and Montague families throughout the play that evolves much more violently. Tybalt is a constant aggressor from the Capulet side of the feud, who will never turn down a chance to initiate or partake in a Capulet versus Montague altercation. The development of the Montague versus Capulet vendetta is what leads Tybalt to fight Romeo. Tybalt is “slain by young Romeo” (3. 1. 144) in the end. Romeo desperately wants to see Tybalt as family, but their families’ influence and the ongoing feud lead to Tybalt’s unnecessary death. Romeo is also banished in response to Tybalt’s murder, which affects he and Juliet emotionally. The Capulets never take the time to understand Juliet. This is most prominent when the Capulets force Juliet into an unwanted marriage with Paris: “Hang thee young baggage! Disobedient wretch! I tell thee what, get thee to church o’ Thursday. […] My fingers itch.”” (3. 5. 160-164) Capulet, by forcing Juliet to marry Paris, practically throws her into hysteria and not only causes her immense sadness, but also puts her in danger and leads her to suicide. Juliet is not used to seeing her father so aggressive and…
