Both The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet is a drama by William Shakespeare in which two young lovers end up in an early grave from loving too much. The short story, “Pyramus and Thisbe”, by Ovid has a similar ending to Romeo and Juliet. Some may argue that fate is to blame for their deaths, but ultimately personal decisions lead to the demise of these young lovers. One of the first poor decisions made in Romeo and Juliet is made by Romeo. Romeo is from the House of Montague and he was asked by his friends to go to party being held by the opposing House of Capulets. Romeo is the son of the head of the montague house, so even showing considering going to this party was a bad idea. On page 391 Romeo says, “Some consequence yet hanging in the stars.” Romeo mentions stars which infers that fate will bring the consequence. Romeo chose to go to this party and he knew it wouldn’t be good, therefore, fate didn’t have anything to do with the bad ending, it was all his decision. Also like Romeo and Juliet the two devise a plan to see each other. They plan to meet “at a well-known place, the Tomb of Ninus….” (Page 488) Thisbe arrives first and as she is waiting a lion comes. She escapes but drops her coat. The tomb is referred to as “well-known” so Pyramus and Thisbe should’ve known that lions were around there. Both made a bad decision picking a dangerous place. The lion mauled the coat she dropped. When Pyramus arrives and sees the tattered coat, he concludes that Thisbe was killed. “He lifted up from the trampled dust what was left of the cloak… He drew his sword and plunged it in his side….” (Page 489) Pyramus made a bad choice acting so impulsively.
