In this context, the man does not believe that he is worthy or “perfect” enough for the girl and does not deserve her; he says this because he does see himself “upon that list” of people who have qualities like Batman or the Greek gods of Achilles and Hercules. On the other hand, the girl replies with the pre-chorus that the she is not seeking perfection in a man- she is not seeking a man with superhero powers. “ But she said…I'm not looking for somebody/With some superhuman gifts/Some superhero/Some fairytale bliss/Just something I can turn to/Somebody I can kiss.” The girl explains that she wants a man who will embrace her when she is scared or frightened and love her with the same love that she gives that man. With the chorus, “I want something just like this,” the girl proclaims that the one that she wants and loves is the man who initially doubted himself because of his imperfections. She loves the man for who he is, despite his imperfections and ensures him again and again with the pre-chorus that perfection is a myth, and he does not have to reach the standards of an immortal being like Achilles and Hercules to win her heart or be happy with her.
