Who Is The Protagonist In The Alchemist

Santiago is the protagonist in Paulo Coelho’s novel, The Alchemist. The Alchemist begins with Santiago sleeping in an abandoned church with his flock of sheep. He has been having a recurring dream. He decided to seek advice from the local gypsy woman and she tells him that he will find treasure near the Egyptian pyramids. When he leaves he finds Melchizedek, the king of Salem, who tells him the same thing. But he also told him that he is succeeding in discovering his Personal Legend which is something you’ve always wanted to accomplish (Coelho, 1998, p.23). He motivates him to go to and leaves him with He is robbed in Africa soon after he had the talk with Melchizedek. He decides to go back home since he doesn’t have any money to continue his journey. On his way home, he walked up this hill that had a crystal shop at the top. He decides to clean the windows to attract customers as exchange for a meal. There he befriends the Englishmen, who is determined to meet the alchemist. Santiago spends most of his time studying nature and the interaction between the caravan leader and followers. They group arrives to Al-Fayoam, a neutral ground, and decide to spend some time there since there’s a tribal war occurring. The Alchemist lives in Al-Fayoum so Santiago assists the Englishmen to find the direction of the Alchemist. They ask people around the local well but no one who this Alchemist was. The only person who had ever heard of the Alchemist and his whereabouts was a girl named Fatima. Fatima and Santiago soon fell in love and wanted to marry her, but due to the escalating war, the caravan leader announced that they had to get moving since it’s not safe anymore.
