In One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest Chief Bromden and McMurphy said “The flock gets sight of a spot of blood on some chicken and they all go to peckin’ at it,see, till they rip the chicken to shreds, blood and bones and feathers. But usually a couple of the flock gets spotted in the fracas, then it’s their turn. And a few more gets spots and gets pecked to death, and more and more. Oh, a peckin’ party can wipe out the whole flock in a matter of a few hours,buddy, I seen it. A mighty awesome sight. the only way to prevent it - with chickens - is to clip blinders on them. Big Nurse seems to suffer from OCD, as disorder never presents itself without McMurphy’s assistance. Due to these things, Big Nurse portrays the antagonist of the novel. She presents a challenge to the novel's “Hero” McMurphy and rules the ward with an iron fist. Even the Black Boys Big Nurse recruits possess evil qualities to intimidate the patients. McMurphy attempting to lift the panel symbolizes a very important aspect of the ward. Prior to McMurphy’s arrival, Big Nurse ran the ward with a mind boggling amount of control. McMurphy after arriving at the ward, found himself dumbfounded by the patients blind loyalty to big nurse, and how opposed to defying her they were. McMurphy, at night while spending time with other patients, after failing at his attempt to change the schedule to watch the world series bet he could pick up a large heavy panel. McMurphy failed, however the point of his attempt was to demonstrate to the patients that trying is important. during the first vote, none of the patients even wanted to try and defy big nurse. Victory seemed impossible to all of them, McMurphy tried to lift that panel to demonstrate all of the patients must make an attempt together in order to challenge Big Nurses
