Personalities of the Mind William G. Golding was a Noble Prize winner in Literature. He was also the author of Lord of the Flies, a book still read to this day in most english classes. The book is about a group of young boys stranded on an island after a plane crash during a war. The boys are tested to stay civilized or become savage. Three characters in the book best represent Sigmund Freud’s theory of psychoanalysis, id, ego, and superego. Sigmund Freud was the founder of psychoanalysis and also an Austrian neurologist. Psychoanalysis is a procedure investigating unconscious mental processes. The id, ego, and superego are parts of your mind that tell what is right and wrong and what you should and shouldn’t do. The character that best represents id is Jack. Jack Merridew was the head of the choir and believed he should be in charge of the boys while they lived on the island but the boys voted for Ralph the oldest. That was the start of Jack’s rage toward all the other boys. Jack always had to have his needs met. He did whatever he wanted to do without thinking of any consequences just like the id. Id is the source of instinctive impulses that seek satisfaction in accordance with the pleasure principle and are modified by the ego and the superego ("Id | Define Id at Dictionary.com," n.d.).
