The Yellow Wallpaper, by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, is an excellent representation of society’s expectations from women in the 19th century. It was required of a woman to be the perfect housewife/mother without having any desires for change since this desire was not well received during those times. This idea is emphasized in this short story as the narrator struggles to fight her growing depression while John, her husband, attempts to repress her He is unaware, or refuses to acknowledge the fact that his wife is truly sick and his treatment is doing the opposite of what he desperately hopes for.
