This is the story of a Butler obsessed with his old master’s ill eye, or as he calls it, “the raven eye”. The Butler claims he is feeling how the eye looks at him and into his soul and how the eye is evil. Therefore, he takes the decision to disappear it for ever, and after a really well planned murder he ends up turning himself in, because he feels the guilt of his actions falling on him. Tell Tale Heart constructs a theme about how culpability can drive people into madness, this is accomplished through the evolution of a proud, astute man, into a violent loony as the story moves through the stages of the murder, the cleaning of the crime, and the arrival of the policemen.…

To many people, a person’s eye is a great indicator on how a person feels, thinks, and what their personality is like: however, that is not the case with the old man in this story. The narrator tells us that the old man was a good person and says, “He had never wronged me. He had never given me insult” (Poe, 150). This means that the eye symbolizes the narrator’s evil mind better than the old man himself. The narrator proves that by stating that once he saw the eye, he couldn’t even see the old man’s face or person, just the eye.…

The narrator displayed nothing but positive emotions towards the old man, yet he conceived the notion to murder him, which shows that he knew the difference between right and wrong. The narrator explains how cautious he was and how he crept into his room every night at midnight for seven days yet did not murder the old man because he did not see the "evil eye". At one point on the eighth night, the old man wakes up to a noise and sits up for an hour staring into the doorway to which the narrator is locked into a trance and does not move a muscle, most likely to prevent suspicion and possibly being caught. The narrator also shows his murderous arrogance by explaining to the audience that he would greet the old man every morning and ask him how his night passed, which shows the audience that he was conscious of his actions because he seemed to get gratification from the fear he was instilling in the old…

The variation of strange and disturbed characters has been a constant throughout all works of gothic fiction. In The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe, the narrator murders an old man for which he has an almost familial love. It is clear that the novel’s narrator has a questionable mental state due to his weak grasp upon reality. This is seen in the way he attributes special powers to the old man’s eye and in his incomprehension towards neighbours hearing the final heartbeats of his victim. First of all, the narrator associates fictional powers with the old man’s pale blue eye.…

What constitutes a great work of fiction? In many aspects, authors such as Edgar Allen Poe are highly regarded, while some lesser-known authors are not held in such high esteem. While the classic stories and works of literature should have a place on our shelves, and in our repertoires of essential readings, room should be made for exploring fiction beyond the realm of famous authors. In reading a work such as "The Werewolf" by Angela Carter, one might compare and contrast it to a short story such as "The Tell-Tale Heart. " It is through the study of themes presented, symbolism used and characters portrayed that one might tell whether or not an unknown author is capable of producing work that measures up to that of a well-established and beloved…
