In ‘The Book Thief’ by Markus Zusak and ‘Homecoming’ by Bruce Dawes, the theme of death underlines the two texts. In ‘The Book Thief’, Markus Zusak chose to narrate most of the book from an omnipresent narrator known as “Death”. Death provides insight into the deeper narrative of Liesel Meminger’s world. “It pains me sometimes how people die…”, Death craves the ability to understand human emotions and in this quote he reveals that the death of someone causes him pain. “The Book Thief” has broadened my understanding of the way that historical fiction can be used to create a sense of realism to historical events, notably through Mark Zusak’s creation of realistic characters that effectively portray what it was like to live in Nazi Germany during the second World War. This has been achieved through Mark Zusak’s successful incorporation of various literary techniques throughout the book. A number of these literary devices will be elaborated in this essay. One of the more striking techniques employed by Mark Zusak in “The Book Thief” is personification where he effectively uses Death as the narrator of the book, and creates a Humanised concept of Death.…

A book written about a historical tragedy with a narrator who is stereotyped as a counteractive figure is very abnormal. The Book Thief, written by Markus Zusak, is a historical fiction novel with Death as the narrator. The general idea that Death as a character would not have any guilt or shame towards the deaths of people is inaccurate in this story. In this particular narration, Zusak gives Death the personality of a regular human. Survivor's guilt is the feeling of guilt for having survived a catastrophe in which others died.…

Markus Zusak, author of The Book Thief, may have chosen to use literary devices for many reasons, including appealing to a younger audience and providing imagery. First of all, Zusak used personification to provide a different point of view to the story and provide some imagery. The first thing he personified was Death, making him the narrator and giving an overall view to the ongoing scene. For example, when Liesel and her brother, Werner, were on the train, Death described the scene: “A suddenness found its way onto his lips then, which were a corroded brown color and peeling, like old paint. In desperate need of redoing.…
