The historical context is in its belief, belief that there are other planets out there, and that nothing is impossible. Because, Ransom at first, did not believe that there was another planet that had aliens on it.

Hyoi: is a creature of the planet Malacandra, he becomes close friends with Ransom and teaches him the “Sorn” language. Later, killed by Weston.
Weston: is a greedy, self-centered man, thick, who thinks a lot about himself, and does not realize that the “animals” on the strange planet are not dumb. He is the dominate one.
Devine: skinny went to school with Ransom, even though neither of the two liked each other. He is Weston’s accomplice. But smarter of the two.
Sorns: they are these giant sloth thingies with long arms (one of them took Ransom to see Oyara).
Oyara: is the “god” of Malacandra, who decides when the animals die, also he is the one who forces Weston and Devine out, Ransom could stay though.
