Who Is The Most Despicable Character In The Crucible

Crucible stands for a situation of a severe trial. Many characters were put under a test each character having a different outcome. People act differently when they are put in an uncomfortable or stressful position. Even though the situation these people were placed in, people were able to act rationally and truthful, but in a group of good people, there is bound to be someone who would do deplorable acts. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Abigail Williams is the most despicable character because she runs away from taking responsibility of starting Salem’s witchcraft frenzy, acts irrationally due to jealousy, and she lies about other people committing heinous crimes. Her first attempt was when she “drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor! (1.448 - 450) ”. Her plan didn’t work in the long run: John Proctor was accused for witchcraft and jailed. Abigail is shown to be manipulative and selfish but most importantly she is jealous. It seems as if she would go into great lengths to get what she wanted as well: “ Hale. Abigail were stabbed tonight; a needle were found stuck in her belly. Elizabeth. And she charges me? (2.1107 - 1109) ” In order to get her point across, Abigail Williams pretends to get bewitched. As seen in the book, Abigail Williams is the main antagonist who caused the death of many innocent people which proves that she is in fact the most despicable person in The Crucible. In a place where the phrase “ guilty before proven innocent ” rules the court, it seems as if the innocent always gets into trouble - trouble that the guilty walks freely away
