One of the most important roles Atticus embraces is one of a lawyer. He is a remarkable lawyer as he is able to be unbiased and objective when he evaluates his cases. During his time as a lawyer, Atticus is assigned a case that questions his virtues and principles. This case, which is a black man charged with the rape of a white woman, forces a wedge between him and his town because of their contradicting views. As the court date for the case approaches, Atticus becomes the subject of the town. The citizens in Maycomb County express their views on Atticus’ actions, “‘you know the court appointed him to defend this nigger.’/‘Yeah, but Atticus aims to defend him. He is a well-known and honored citizen of Maycomb. He is admired for his humility and impartial behaviour towards all other citizens of Maycomb County. Most of all he acts as a role model for the people living in Maycomb. Some people, like Miss Maudie, recognise all that Atticus has done for the town. She explains to the children how important Atticus is to Maycomb and his contributions, “We’re so rarely called on to be Christians, but when we are, we’ve got men like Atticus to go for us” (Lee 215). Moral Courage is presented by Atticus due to the fact that he stands out from the crowd. Atticus represents Maycomb’s righteousness and Godliness. It takes an extraordinary person to stand up for himself and his town. Atticus displays moral courage as a citizen yet again through his conduct in his house and in the town. He believes that a person should not act any differently privately than when they are in public. He says this to Mr. Heck Tate when he encounters a situation that may cause him to live that way, “I can’t live one way in town and another way in my home” (Lee, 274). In today’s world, it is very difficult to stay true to oneself regardless of where one is and not be influenced by the public. Most people assume a false persona when they go out and become a completely different person.
